Players don’t want me to change, insists Mourinho
Roma boss Jose Mourinho has claimed that his players don’t want him to change his brash attitude.
Mourinho has frequently made the headlines for brand of man management that many feel is outdated.
This has particularly been the case since he moved back to Serie A. At Roma, he has called out some of the club’s youngest professionals and last week questioned the mentality of his team following a 2-0 defeat to Inter in the Coppa Italia in midweek.
Speaking to the press on Saturday, the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid boss was insistent that he will not be changing.
"There are no secrets between us, I say things to their face, and I invite the players to engage in a dialogue not to have a monologue with them,” Mourinho said.
"All my players told me they don't want me to change, so I told them I will not change even if you tell me to do it.
"But they told me to not change because that's what they want. The fact that I shared my thoughts with them or just criticism them is the work of a coach.
"There were my players telling me to keep doing what I do, so everything published on the media, I could say really bad things about it or even use some words when I was Inter coach. I am not the same person 12 years ago, but I can say that it was a big lie."
Despite the reports, Mourinho retains a strong bond with the hierarchy of Roma and does not find his position under any threat, despite a relatively disappointing campaign to date.
Roma are back in action on Sunday, when they tackle Sassuolo in Serie A action, with the capital side aiming for a victory that would keep them in touch with the European spots.
