During the January transfer window, Mauro Icardi was linked with a transfer to Juventus and not for the first time. But, in the end, the Old Lady opted for Dusan Vlahovic and this has closed to the door to Icardi for the foreseeable future.

Despite that, Icardi could still return to Serie A this summer. The Argentine striker isn’t enjoying much playing time at Paris Saint-Germain and would relish the chance to play in Italy’s top division again, where he scored 121 goals over his 219 Serie A appearances at Sampdoria and Inter.

Neither of those clubs would be able or willing to take the player who just turned 29 either, but Icardi remains popular in Italy and there are three potential landing spots, with these suitors discussed below.

Icardi to AC Milan?

The leading candidate to bring Icardi back to Serie A is AC Milan. With Zlatan Ibrahimovic aged 40 and with Olivier Giroud aged 35, it’s time for the Rossoneri to think to the future and Icardi would be welcomed into the stadium where he scored so many goals with Inter.

Icardi to Roma?

Another option would be a move to the Italian capital, with Jose Mourinho a big fan of the centre-forward. It was reported that Mourinho wanted Icardi last summer, just after the Portuguese coach arrived, but no deal could be done then. Now, with just two years remaining on Icardi’s PSG contract, it could be easier to prize him away from Paris, meaning he could trade one capital city for another.

Icardi to Napoli?

Even though Icardi’s relationship with Diego Maradona wasn’t the best, the prospect of moving to Naples as an Argentine and trying to win another Scudetto for the southern city is attractive to the 29-year-old. Aurelio De Laurentiis would reportedly like to sign Icardi too, having been an admirer for some time. Finding the funds could be difficult, but Napoli are on course for a return to the Champions League and have that as an advantage over Roma.
