Atalanta's 10 biggest sales of all time

Atalanta have consistently punched well above their weight under Gian Piero Gasperini, with the Bergamo side regularly competing against the biggest teams in Italy despite a far smaller budget.

Their rise under the genius of Gasperini culminated in their 2024 Europa League triumph over Bayer Leverkusen, but their limited resources mean that selling their star players is inevitable.

Below, FootballTransfers lists Atalanta's 10 biggest sales ever.

10. Bryan Cristante - €22m (to Roma, 2019)

Bryan Cristante is the 10th most expensive sale in Atalanta’s history, courtesy of his €22m move to Roma in 2019.

The midfielder joined Atalanta from Benfica after a successful 18-month loan spell in Bergamo, but he was immediately sent on a season-long loan move to Roma and the deal became permanent in July 2019.

9. Andrea Conti - €24m (to Milan, 2017)

Andrea Conti rose through the Atalanta youth ranks and after two loan spells away from the club, he made his first-team debut at the age of 19.

He starred in a right-wing-back role under Gian Piero Gasperini in 2016-17 and after notching eight goals and five assists in 33 Serie A games, AC Milan spent €24m to sign him.

8. Gianluca Mancini - €24m (to Roma, 2020)

Gianluca Mancini failed to make the grade at Fiorentina, but just six months after joining Serie B outfit Perugia on a permanent deal, he sealed a move to Atalanta.

He made 48 appearances across a two-year spell in Bergamo, before completing a loan move to AS Roma in 2019. The deal included an obligation to buy and Mancini subsequently became a permanent Roma player in 2020.

7. Robin Gosens - €27.4m (to Inter, 2022)

After bouncing around youth systems in Germany and the Netherlands, Robin Gosens ended up at Atalanta in 2017, and he established himself as one of Europe’s top wing-backs during his time in Bergamo.

The German made 157 appearances for the Italian side, notching 50 goal contributions, before moving to Inter on an initial loan deal in January 2022.

The deal was made permanent six months later, but Gosens was subsequently sold to Union Berlin in August 2023.

6. Alessandro Bastoni - €31.3m (to Inter, 2017)

Alessandro Bastoni is one of Atalanta’s best ever youth products and he made his senior debut for the club at just 17 years and seven months old.

However, he had only made four senior appearances when Inter splashed a whopping €31.3m to sign him in 2017.

Bastoni was loaned back to Atalanta for the campaign, but he barely featured and it wasn’t until after a loan spell at Parma that he established himself as a regular at Inter.

5. Franck Kessie - €32m (to Milan, 2019)

Atalanta plucked Franck Kessie from the relative obscurity of the Ivorian top flight, and he was promoted into the club’s first-team following an impressive loan spell in Serie B.

However, Kessie spent just one season in Atalanta’s senior side before embarking on a two-year loan move to AC Milan.

The San Siro giants made the deal permanent in 2019, and Kessie departed to join Barcelona on a free transfer three years later.

4. Dejan Kulusevski - €39m (to Juventus, 2020)

Atalanta paid €3.5m to sign Dejan Kulusevski as a 16-year-old, but he only played three first-team games for the club before Juventus decided to snap him up for €39m.

Kulusevski had impressed in Atalanta’s youth system and after 11 goal contributions in 17 league games on loan at Parma during the first-half of the 2019/20 season, Juve spent nearly €40m on the Sweden star.

However, he failed to make a lasting impression in Turin and he was sold to Tottenham in 2023 after an 18-month loan move to north London.

3. Teun Koopmeiners - €51.3m (to Juventus, 2024)

Teun Koopmeiners joined this list upon his €51.3m move to Juventus in August 2024.

The Dutch midfielder spent three years at Atalanta, after moving to Italy from boyhood club AZ Alkmaar, and he played a key role as Gian Piero Gasperini’s side won the 2024 Europa League.

In total, Koopmeiners scored 29 goals in 129 Atalanta games, but he decided to leave the club after being heavily pursued by Juventus head coach Thiago Motta.

2. Cristian Romero - €52m (to Tottenham, 2022)

Cristian Romero never played a single game as a permanent Atalanta player, yet they turned a tidy €35m profit on the Argentina defender.

His loan move to Bergamo was made permanent in August 2021 and he was loaned straight to Tottenham one day later, with the north London giants including an obligation to buy for €52m in the deal.

Romero won the 2022 World Cup while at Spurs and he was named as the club’s vice-captain upon Ange Postecoglou’s arrival in 2023.

1. Rasmus Hojlund - €73.9m (to Man Utd, 2023)

Rasmus Hojlund became Atalanta’s all-time record sale when he left the Serie A club to join Manchester United for a whopping €73.9m.

The Denmark forward spent just one season in Bergamo, scoring 10 goals and providing four assists, but Man Utd were determined to purchase him as their new marquee centre-forward and a move was completed in August 2023.

After failing to score in his first 14 Premier League games, Hojlund eventually ended his debut campaign at Old Trafford with 16 goals across all competitions.
