Viktor Gyokeres has cost Sporting CP thousands of euros along with team-mate Morten Hjulmand thanks to a bizarre sock incident in a recent clash with Braga.

Gyokeres netted the opening goal in a 1-1 draw on Monday, yet the Sweden international striker is now making the headlines because of his attire.

Sporting have been fined £2,040 after the second half of the match started five minutes late because Gyokeres and Hjulmand elected to make a late change to their socks, A Bola reports.

Gyokeres stars against Braga

Earlier in the encounter, Gyokeres had shown his eye for goal. The game was just three minutes old when he burst through the defence to score what he thought was the opening goal, only for it to be chopped off for a marginal offside call.

The hitman, though, did not need to wait long before getting his name on the scoresheet for real. Sporting were awarded a direct free-kick 25 yards out, and the 26-year-old obliged by drilling a fine low shot into the net.

It was the type of finish that has attracted Arsenal to move to secure his signature for next season, with the Gunners ready to offer the striker a bumper contract in order to secure a deal. Chelsea and Manchester United are set to be left disappointed by his decision.

Gyokeres has scored 44 goals in 44 appearances for Sporting this season and is thought to be the player to provide extra impetus to Arsenal’s attack.

If the Swede is hoping to take direct free kicks next season at the Emirates Stadium, he may have to think again after Declan Rice’s deadly double against Real Madrid.

Certainly, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is unlikely to stand for the type of stunt Gyokeres pulled against Braga, which cost Sporting an embarrassing fine.
