The January transfer window will undoubtedly be an opportunity for some of European football’s lesser-known talents to make the next step to become continental stars.

One player that looks certain to attempt exactly that is Zenit St Petersburg striker Sardar Azmoun, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season and has been attracting interest from all over Europe with his goals in the Russian Premier League.

The Iran international has been heavily linked with moves to England and France in recent weeks, but just how good is Azmoun and where could he end up next month?

What position does Sardar Azmoun play?

Azmoun is undoubtedly a striker and tends to play as a classic No.9 for Zenit. According to SciSports, Azmoun has played mostly as a mobile stiker or as a poacher for Zenit this season, which is largely a continuation from last season.

Although he has been known to fill in as a target man or shadow striker if called upon.

How good is Sardar Azmoun?

After coming through the ranks at Iranian side Sepahan, the striker made the move to Russian football when Rubin Kazan made an offer to sign the striker. Over the course of 77 games, he picked up a respectable 17 goals and 14 assists.

After three seasons, Azmoun then made the move to relegation battlers Rostov, where he found more game time and certainly more goals, picking up 25 goals and six assists over the course of two and a half seasons.

Following a brief return to Rubin Kazan, Azmoun then got his big break in 2019 when Zenit signed the striker for €12 million and offered him the opportunity to showcase his talents at one of Russia’s biggest clubs.

Over the course of 104 games for the club, Azmoun has done exactly that by bagging 62 goals and 23 assists along with three Russian Premier Leagues and a Russian Cup in 2020.

So far this season the Iran international has bagged 10 goals and four assists in 21 games for Zenit. Which isn’t bad at all, but is perhaps a little bit off his tally of 19 goals and six assists in 29 games from last season.

What clubs are interested in Sardar Azmoun?

Due to his remarkable form in Russia, Azmoun has attracted interest from clubs in some of Europe’s biggest leagues.

A few months ago, French publication Onze Mondial suggested that Arsenal may be considering a move for the Zenit striker as a long-term replacement for Alexandre Lacazette, who is set to leave at the end of the season.

Since then, Everton have also joined the race to sign the 26-year-old striker, who are desperate to sign the prolific Iranian striker, according to 90min.

However, it seems as though the player’s future will instead take him to France, where Lyon have reportedly already agreed terms with the player and are expected to complete the signing of the player in January, according to L’Équipe.
