Mbappe’s contract is running down and he will be a free agent as of 1 July, 2022.

Of course, he will be available to discuss terms with before then, with clubs such as Manchester City and Liverpool also linked with the 22-year-old.

Given the stern competition they are up against, Real Madrid are optimistic over their chances of signing Mbappe, with president Florentino Perez going to far as to tell El Debate: “We hope that on January 1 everything can be solved.”

It was the clearest indication yet that Los Blancos are certain they will sign a player who has also indicated his admiration for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp in the past.

How can they be so confident?

Real Madrid’s strong position on Mbappe

According to L’Equipe, there are three major reasons that Real Madrid are so buoyed by Mbappe breaking his silence over his future. During these interviews, he admitted that he told PSG he wanted to leave in the summer, when the Spanish side were busy trying to find a formula to buy him.

Firstly, Mbappe will be able to open talks with any club he wishes on January 1. This means that PSG’s wishes for the future of the player are no longer relevant.

Despite Perez’s words, though, Real Madrid want to be open and transparent over negotiations with Mbappe.

Given the hostility of PSG towards the Spanish side, though, that could be difficult.

Secondly, Mbappe’s recent interviews have confirmed his desire to go to Madrid. This has been a long-standing wish of the attacker, who has admired the club since he watched Cristiano Ronaldo turn out in the famous white.

Indeed, he could have moved there as a youth, having been shown around the facilities by another of his idols, Zinedine Zidane.

Finally, Real Madrid have been boosted by La Liga’s salary cap. With a budget of €739m for payroll over the course of the current campaign, the financial health of the club is in sufficient order to allow the move to take place.

Furthermore, the completion of the Bernabeu renovations are expected to generate another €300m in annual revenue for the club.

Real Madrid, then, must be favourites to sign Mbappe ahead of Liverpool and Man City.
