Manchester United’s 5-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday sent shockwaves around the world which apparently ended up waking up a grumpy soul in Milan.

According to the Manchester Evening News, reports of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer facing the sack have pulled Antonio Conte out of his mid-season slumber and could end up seeing the Italian tactician replace his Norwegian counterpart at Old Trafford.

The English publication claims that Conte is certainly interested in the job, but would need a number of reassurances over his autonomy in the job and many of the responsibilities that he prefers to take on himself when he arrives at a new club.

However, rather than bicker and come to an unhappy compromise with Conte, Man Utd should instead hand him the keys to Old Trafford and let him work his magic. The Italian manager is exactly what the Red Devils need.

He’s an expert at winning league titles

Over the course of his 11 full seasons as a manager, Conte has won no less than six league titles in Italy and England.

Indeed, while the Italian manager may not be as successful in Europe as other coaches of his standard, he has become a specialist at grinding out results and winning silverware in league campaigns.

Although Conte’s final season at Chelsea didn’t go according to plan, his average points per game in the Premier League stands at 2.14 - which is considerably more than Solskjaer’s average of 1.66 at Man Utd.

If the Old Trafford side want a manager that will guide them back towards the top of the league table, they would struggle to find a more qualified specialist than Conte.

He could fix Man Utd’s transfer policy

Some of the fears over Conte wanting too much control over Man Utd’s transfer policy should be music to the ears of the club’s supporters, who have watched the Old Trafford side waste untold fortunes in the transfer market for years.

Man Utd have spent as much money as any club in the world under Solskjaer but all that’s gotten them is a top-heavy side that don’t know how to close teams down or control football matches.

If Conte was allowed to bring in his own players, he would quickly build a team capable of winning games and league titles. It may not include Cristiano Ronaldo or other needless stars, but it would certainly function properly and be hard to beat.
