Managerial changes are often clear signs of seismic shifts in form and fortune in any league and Tottenham's appointment of Antonio Conte is undoubtedly a clear example of that.

After relinquishing Nuno Espirito Santo of his duties on Monday morning, the London club were quickly on the case of enticing the Italian coach back to the Premier League. They officially appointed him on Tuesday.

The irony, of course, is that Spurs only stole a lead on other admirers of Conte due to the fact that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his misfiring Manchester United side put on an unexpected performance to beat Tottenham 3-0 on Saturday evening.

Now, the Old Trafford side may have felt obliged to stick by Solskjaer after that win. But they were, unquestionably, fools to do so.

Why Conte would have been perfect for Man Utd

Over the course of his 11 full seasons as a manager, Conte has won no less than six league titles in Italy and England.

Indeed, while the Italian manager may not be as successful in Europe as other coaches of his standard, he has become a specialist at grinding out results and winning silverware in league campaigns.

Although Conte’s final season at Chelsea didn’t go according to plan, his average points per game in the Premier League stands at 2.14 - which is considerably more than Solskjaer’s average of 1.66 at Man Utd.

If the Old Trafford side wanted a manager that would guide them back towards the top of the league table, they would struggle to find a more qualified specialist than Conte.

Some of the fears over Conte wanting too much control over Man Utd’s transfer policy should be music to the ears of the club’s supporters, who have watched the Old Trafford side waste untold fortunes in the transfer market for years.

Man Utd have spent as much money as any club in the world under Solskjaer but all that’s gotten them is a top-heavy side that doesn't know how to close teams down or control football matches.

If Conte was allowed to bring in his own players, he would have quickly built a team capable of winning games and league titles. It may not include Cristiano Ronaldo or other needless stars, but it would certainly function properly and be hard to beat.

Man Utd's loss is Tottenham's gain.
