Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is set to come on the transfer market in January, with the Spanish club hopeful of selling the Netherlands international to raise some much-needed funds for player purchases.

While the Catalans have a raft of squad players they would doubtless rather offload, the high wages that these players command makes such a deal tricky.

Revealed: Football's most valuable superstars

If Barca want to raise some real money, they are going to have to turn to one of their regulars – and De Jong appears to be the man considered most expendable and profitable by the club.

“I know that Barcelona needs money and a great offer for Frenkie could help, but I don't see it happening anytime soon,” John de Jong, the player’s father, told AD.

There are plenty of possible suitors for the former Ajax player, who has never quite fulfilled his undoubted potential since arriving at Camp Nou in 2019.

De Jong already seems to have ruled out a move to Manchester United because of the poor weather, which may also make him hesitant to join either Manchester City or Liverpool.

Both of those clubs, though, have a greater need for a central midfielder and, arguably, have a greater pull at present because of the quality throughout their sides. Furthermore, the wages that Man City can offer could ease any issues posed by the rain.

Chelsea are another one of the clubs closely linked with De Jong, with the aging Blues midfield in need of rejuvenation at some point.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich are also mentioned in dispatches.

How much to Barcelona want for De Jong?

According to a report from Fichajes, Barcelona will sell De Jong for a fee of €90 million.

This would be a remarkably fair price for the 24-year-old. FootballTransfers’ algorithm puts De Jong’s worth at €85m, which closely corroborates with the club’s asking price.

De Jong, meanwhile, is Barcelona’s most valuable asset our algorithm shows, with Pedri, at €72m, next.
