How Chelsea have already made money from player sales in the January window

Chelsea may be one of the richest clubs in the world but the club are undoubtedly one of the best in Europe at making money from players they no longer need.
For example, over the course of the past five years, the Stamford Bridge club have spent a remarkable £793 million on transfer fees to bring players to the club.

However, over that same period, the club have also raised an equally impressive £533 million from selling players on.
Not only is that an impressive amount in its own right, it’s also bested by only three other clubs across the whole of Europe in that time, with Borussia Dortmund, Monaco and Barcelona making more.
As such, as the January transfer window approaches, it’s worth bearing in mind that the club are perhaps more likely to raise money rather than spend it. And according to a new report from Italy, the Stamford Bridge side have already begun lining their pockets.
Chelsea have already cashed in on one player
According to Goal, Chelsea have already cashed in on former player Jeremie Boga, after his current club Sassuolo paid the London club to remove a clause in the player’s contract.
The Ivory Coast international came through the club’s academy and made his debut against Burnley in 2017, before making the move to Italy for £3.5 million in 2018.
Since then, Boga has gone from strength to strength in the Italian top-flight and is now attracting interest from Atalanta, who reportedly offered €22 million for the player in the summer.
With Sassuolo expecting to sell the player in the summer for as much as €25 million, the Serie A side have reportedly now paid Chelsea €6 million to remove a clause in Boga’s contract.
As such, Chelsea have already made a sizable amount of money from one of their former players before the window has even opened.
