Should Liverpool sell Oxlade-Chamberlain in January?
A lot has changed for Liverpool in 12 months. The club may still be fuelled by Jurgen Klopp’s raw exuberance on the touch line, but on the pitch the team look in far better nick than they did at this point last season.
Rather than going from one game to the next with Fabinho playing three different positions and James Milner being held together with duct tape and the hopes and prayers of the kop, Klopp’s team now look well stocked and, if anything, may need to shed a few pounds in January.
Indeed, the coming transfer window may prove to be the end of the road for a number of Liverpool players and perhaps none more so than Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Why Liverpool should sell Oxlade-Chamberlain
Oxlade-Chamberlain missed most of last season with a knee injury, but he returned to full training this season and likely looked forward to plenty of game time in Klopp’s side. But that hasn't exactly worked out.
Although the midfielder has made 19 appearances for Liverpool this season, he’s only started five of the club’s 16 Premier League games to date, and was on the bench for the Anfield side’s first three and rather crucial group stage clashes in the Champions League.
Indeed, while Oxlade-Chamberlain has his uses for Klopp, he doesn’t offer the expertise in attack that Mohamed Salah & Co. do so well, nor is he a box-to-box midfielder like Jordan Henderson or Fabinho that can defend confidently either.
In other words, the former Arsenal talent is a jack of all trades in this Liverpool team but a master of none. And if Liverpool are forced into selling players before they can invest heavily in new key players, Oxlade-Chamberlain is a prime candidate to be moved on.
How much could they get for him in January?
Undoubtedly, the price Liverpool can demand for the midfielder will depend on who is interested in the England international.
At this moment in time, Arsenal seem to be the main contenders to re-sign the player. And as such, Liverpool may be able to push for a larger fee, since they’re selling to another Premier League side.
