No Diego Costa for Wolves as Nuno reveals January plans
Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo believes Wolves won’t be making any signings in the January transfer window, which confirms the club won’t be making an ambitious play for free agent Diego Costa.
Following Raul Jimenez’s horror injury which saw him suffer a fractured skull, Wolves have been on the lookout for another centre-forward not only to come in as a replacement, but to provide competition up top when he returns.
One name they were linked with was Costa, who is now a free agent after leaving Atletico Madrid by mutual consent a couple of weeks ago.
Wolves would be able to sign him without a transfer fee, albeit with hefty wages likely to be demanded by the former Chelsea man.
However, the interest never materialised into any negotiations, and Nuno has confirmed that he is now happy with his options in the final third after recalling Patrick Cutrone from Fiorentina and Morgan Gibbs-White from Swansea.
“This is a transfer window that is always hard but it’s become harder with the new situations,” the Wolves boss said on Friday.
“The situation of Brexit and not allowing European players, all these things.
“Sometimes the targets that you want are not available so that’s why we made the decision to recall Morgan and Patrick to give us some time because I believe the solutions are here with us and not in the transfer window.”
Wolves aren’t enjoying a particularly good campaign in the 2020/21 Premier League as they have won just six out of 18 games to be positioned in 14th. With just 19 goals scored in those 18 games, they are have the 15th worst attacking record in the top flight so far.
