Beckham: Solskjaer is doing an incredible job at Man Utd
David Beckham has thrown support behind former team-mate and current Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, praising the job the Norwegian is doing at Old Trafford.
Following the tumultuous tenure of Jose Mourinho, Solskjaer took over Man Utd on an initial temporary basis in December of 2018, before going on to earn the role on a permanent basis.
In the 2019/20 campaign he led the club back to the Champions League with a third-place finish in the Premier League, though they ended up some distance behind Manchester City and eventual champions Liverpool.
Solskjaer still hasn’t won anything as boss, and has a poor record in semi-finals since his arrival, meaning that he has never truly been safe in the job.
Man Utd may have led the 2020/21 Premier League for a short period towards the turn of the year, but they have fallen away drastically in the title race and are currently 14 points behind Champions-elect, Man City.
What has Beckham said?
Beckham believes what Solskjaer is achieving is “incredible”, however.
“I’ve seen some of the criticism but I suppose when you are a manager of Man United when they’ve had success over the years that they’ve had, there was always going to be a point where people get criticised, whether it’s the players, whether it’s the owners, whether it’s the manager,” the Inter Miami owner told ESPN.
“Ole’s been in the game long enough to be able to take any kind of criticism. He’s very quiet, he gets on with his job, and I think he’s done an incredible job down at United.
“The results are starting to show that. Hopefully, it continues because the fans love Ole, we all love Ole and we all want him to do well. So when the criticism comes, he’s one person that can take it.”
At the weekend, Man Utd were knocked out of the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage by Leicester, which takes away yet another opportunity for Solskjaer to win some silverware.
There only real chance now remains the Europa League, where they have gained a favourable draw against La Liga outfit, Granada.
