Manchester City have announced that Sergio Aguero will leave the club in the summer when his contract expires.

Aguero signed for Man City in 2011 from Atletico Madrid and has since written himself into the history of both the club and the Premier League. Indeed, he was the man responsible for scoring the dramatic 94th-minute goal that sealed the club’s first league title in 44 years in the 2011-12 campaign.

Despite scoring 257 goals for the club in 384 appearances, he has been beset by injury problems this season and will depart in the summer after a decade of service.

‘Aguero’s contribution cannot be overstated’

City Group chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said: “Sergio’s contribution to Manchester City over the last 10 years cannot be overstated. His legend will be indelibly etched into the memories of everyone who loves the Club and maybe even in those who simply love football.

“This is not yet the moment for farewell words and speeches. There is still much to achieve in the remainder of the time we have with Sergio, and we look forward to his contributions to the challenges which lay ahead.

“In the meantime, it gives me great pleasure to announce that we will be commissioning an artist to create a statue of Sergio to live at the Etihad Stadium alongside the ones under construction for Vincent [Kompany] and David [Silva]. And we look forward to the opportunity to bid Sergio a fitting farewell at the end of the season.”

The 32-year-old Aguero has managed only 14 appearances in all competitions this term as a result of injury and illness.

Indeed, his first and so far only Premier League goal of the season came against Fulham immediately before the international break from the penalty spot.

Nevertheless, Aguero enjoys a formidable record in the Premier League, having become the competition’s record marksman from abroad and holding the record for the most hat-tricks in the competition with 12.
