Top 10 Sergio Aguero moments at Manchester City
Sergio Aguero is leaving Manchester City this summer following a decade-long period of excellence in the Premier League.
The Argentine arrived at the club in the summer of 2011 for around £35million from Atletico Madrid; big things were expected, but it speaks volumes about what he did achieve that he was able to surpass expectations.
He wasn’t just a great goalscorer, but a scorer of great goals, and contributed to some of, if not the biggest moment in the history of the Premier League.
Here are his 10 best moments in a Man City shirt:
10. PREDATOR V NORWICH
At the beginning of December in 2011, Man City maintained their 100% home record in the 2011/12 Premier League with a comfortable 5-1 win against Norwich.
Aguero broke the deadlock in that fixture in truly unconventional fashion, twisting, turning, and pirouetting inside the box, evading numerous Norwich defenders before eventually stabbing a finish into the bottom corner.
It was a remarkable feat of balance, close control, and of course, that predatory instinct in front of goal.
9. WIGAN HAT TRICK
Those who were worried about Aguero adapting to the Premier League needn’t have been, as he would go on to score six goals in his opening three games in the league for City.
After scoring three in his first two, he would score his first hat-trick for his new club in just his third appearance in the league, firing three goals past Wigan.
All of the goals were the strikes of a master finisher, each beautifully nestled into the bottom corner past the goalkeeper.
Man City had a true superstar on their hands.
8. 50TH GOAL V MAN UTD
In David Moyes’ first derby as Man Utd manager, Aguero and City ensured it would not be a day to remember for the Scot, as he witnessed his side be totally outclassed in a 4-1 loss.
At that time, the partnership of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic was in its twilight years, and Aguero took advantage, tearing them apart on the day.
He would score his 50th Man City goal in the game, with a spectacular instep left-footed volley from near the six-yard box – without even looking at the target.
7. FIVE IN 20 V NEWCASTLE
Against Newcastle at home back in 2015, Man City had to win to return to the top of the table.
It looked like it was going to be a frustrating day, as for a decent portion of the match they were 1-0 down thanks to an 18th minute goal from Aleksandar Mitrovic.
Then stepped up Aguero, who would go on to score no less than five goals in the space of 20 on-field minutes between the 42nd and 62nd minutes.
The pick of the bunch was probably for his hat-trick, as he sent a vintage, dinked finish over the oncoming goalkeeper.
6. BAYERN HAT-TRICK
In a crunch Champions League clash against Bayern Munich in 2014, Aguero earned an early penalty after running through on goal only to be scythed down by Mehdi Benatia, who saw red for his offence.
Even though he would convert the penalty he earned, Bayern fought back to make it 2-1 heading into the latter stages.
Queue another classic Aguero fightback as the Argentine would go on to score two more goals in the last five minutes to complete his hat-trick.
His second, in particular, displayed a mesmerising turn of pace and finish.
5. FOUR V LEICESTER
At the beginning of 2018, Aguero was on fire. City were gunning towards their first Premier League title under Pep Guardiola in record-breaking style. In February, Leicester City, who had beaten City in each of the previous two seasons, headed to the Etihad Stadium looking to spoil the party.
But the home side proved too much for the Foxes, as Aguero netted for the seventh game in a row, taking his early year tally to 13 in 10 games. All of his four goals came in the second half.
4. SOLO IN THE DERBY
After winning their first Premier League title the previous season, City were expected to dominate. But they found themselves trailing Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United by 15 points late on into the 2012/13 campaign.
On their first visit to Old Trafford since that historic 6-1 victory, City knew that even a win would mean little in the grand scheme of things, but they still came out on top. Their 2-1 triumph came thanks in no small part to Aguero’s brilliant solo goal, which saw him dart into the area parallel to the goal before smashing his shot into the roof of the net.
3. DEBUT BRACE V SWANSEA
The anticipation was palpable on the opening night of the 2011/12 season as newly-promoted Swansea City came to town.
Aguero, fresh from playing in the Copa America that summer, was on the bench, but was introduced with enough time to score twice, including a beautiful strike from range, and set up another for David Silva with a brilliant piece of improvisation on the touchline.
It was the start of something brilliant.
2. RECORD BREAKER V NAPOLI
If there were any doubting Aguero’s credentials as an all-time City great by late 2017, a trip to Napoli in the Champions League extinguished them fairly quickly. Man City won 3-2 at the Stadio San Paolo.
But the game belonged to Aguero, who finally overtook Eric Brook’s record and grabbed himself a piece of history with his 178th goal for the club. With not many games left in a City shirt, him celebrating as he did against Napoli is not a sight Premier League fans will see very often anymore.
1. AGUEROOOOOOO
We swear you’ll never see anything like this ever again. There really isn’t an argument to be made against Aguero’s greatest ever City moment.
On the final day of his debut campaign, City needed to beat Queens Park Rangers to lift the Premier League title. If they didn’t, Manchester United could steal it with victory over Sunderland.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s men did their job with minimal fuss, but heading into stoppage time, City were trailing at home. Edin Dzeko headed in a leveller, and then with almost the last kick of the season, Aguero kept his cool to score the most important goal ever scored by a Manchester City player.
