The Portuguese has been under pressure for a string of adverse results at Spurs and the board have pulled the trigger, the club confirmed on Monday.

Spurs were at one point on top of the Premier League in December, but have since suffered a drastic decline in performances.

Chairman Daniel Levy took to the club’s official website to thank Mourinho for his services during what he described as “some of our most difficult times as a club”.

“On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged,” Levy said.

Since the end of January, Tottenham are on a run of seven defeats in 14 Premier League games and have been knocked out of the FA Cup and the Europa League during that time.

The Lilywhites are currently sitting in seventh on the Premier League table, five points outside of the top four.

The news comes less than 24 hours after Spurs were announced as one of the 12 founding teams of the new Super League.

The former Chelsea and Man United boss was hired in November of 2019 after the club sacked Mauricio Pochettino.

Twice a winner of the Champions League with Porto and Inter Milan, Mourinho failed to guide Spurs into the competition this season and saw his side knocked out in the Europa League Round of 16.

Spurs are without a trophy since 2008, but Mourinho had them on the brink of ending that drought with the League Cup final against Manchester City set to take place next week.

Who will replace Mourinho as Tottenham manager?

The club have also confirmed that former midfielder Ryan Mason will take charge of first-team training on Monday, with multiple reports suggesting he will take over temporarily until the end of the season. Chris Powell will reportedly work alongside him.

The 29-year-old was forced to retire from football in 2018 after a horror head injury suffered when playing in the Premier League for Hull City.

Mason made 53 Premier League appearances for Spurs across two seasons with the club, earning a solitary England cap while at the club in 2015.

He has yet to venture into management, with this potentially being his first job since the end of his playing career.
