Kane has stated that he wants to be competing for the game’s biggest prizes and has hinted at his discontent with finding himself at an uncompetitive Tottenham side.

With Man Utd seeking a No.9 option, they have been strongly linked with a move, but so too have Manchester City, Chelsea and Ligue 1 outfit Paris Saint-Germain.

Sheringham, who left Spurs for Man Utd in 1997, understands why Kane feels the way he does but says that Spurs have shown themselves to be ambitious enough to hope to keep him.

“He's trying to tell people that he wants to play at the top level," he told Sky Sports. "It's a little bit similar to where I was at Tottenham.

“I felt the club weren't going in the right direction which is why I said I wanted to leave but I'm not so sure about that at the moment.

“You can tell by the managers that Daniel Levy is trying to bring in to Tottenham that they're still optimistic and they're trying to reach for the stars.”

Spurs were linked with former Inter boss Antonio Conte and also a return for White Hart Lane favourite Mauricio Pochettino, who is presently at Paris Saint-Germain. However, it appears that they have missed out on both.

Sheringham offers Spurs hope on Kane

Sheringham added: "I don't think it is the end of the road for Harry Kane and Tottenham right this minute but it will depend on which manager comes in and at the end of the day he has got a three-year contract left still as well.

"If they don't want to let him go unless he's had assurances from Daniel Levy in previous summers then he might be there for next season."

Kane has played 336 times in total for Tottenham, where he has spent his whole career, and won a third Premier League Golden Boot in 2020/21 after netting 23 Premier League goals.
