Timo Werner may not be getting much game time for the German national team at Euro 2020, but he remains a pivotal figure in Chelsea’s summer transfer window.

Reports in England and Spain recently linked the German international with a summer move to Real Madrid just 12 months after completing a £47.7 million move to Stamford Bridge.

Apparently, new Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti saw more than enough of the pacey striker in the Premier League to urge his new employers to consider making a move.

However, such rumours have seemingly prompted Chelsea to respond in kind, with the Mirror now reporting that Thomas Tuchel and the club’s hierarchy have absolutely no intention of selling Werner this summer.

And, despite popular misconceptions to the contrary, there’s plenty of reasons as to why Chelsea will want to keep a hold of the German striker for next season.

How good or bad has Werner been at Chelsea?

While much has been made of Werner’s poor record in front of goal this season, much of it has been slightly overblown.

The striker still managed to net 12 goals, which was better than every other player in the Chelsea squad that season.

What’s often overlooked with regards to Werner is that he also provided a remarkable amount of assists in those games too. Alongside his 12 goals, the German striker also bagged 15 assists.

And in terms of pure goal contributions the former RB Leipzig forward was comfortably Chelsea’s most dangerous player.

Why Chelsea won’t sell Werner this summer

Not only was Werner Chelsea’s best forward last season but he may also be one of their only options in he No.9 position going into the new season.

It now seems likely that Olivier Giroud will leave the club after Euro 2020 and Tammy Abraham will likely be sold this summer, following his fall from grace under Tuchel’s management.

There’s every chance Chelsea will sign a new forward in the coming months, but it’s more than likely that he’ll be tasked with putting pressure and providing competition with Werner rather than replacing the German striker just yet.
