Which Man Utd players have changed squad number for the 2021/22 season?
Manchester United have confirmed that four players have changed squad number ahead of the beginning of the new Premier League season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side open up the campaign with a match against rivals Leeds United at Old Trafford, with the target an improvement on last season’s second-placed finish.
United will have Jadon Sancho among their ranks as they seek to end their title drought, but there are also numerous players who will play this first match of the campaign sporting new digits on their shirts.
Perhaps the most prominent of these is hot prospect Amad Diallo, who has moved from the No.19 shirt to the No.16 jersey. Although the Ivory Coast international has impressed since arriving from Atalanta in January, there remains speculation that he could depart the club via a loan deal before the end of the transfer window.
Furthermore, Amad will not be in the squad for Saturday’s match as he was away in Japan representing Ivory Coast at the Olympics, although he is expected to make his return in the near future.
New Man Utd squad numbers
From | To | |
---|---|---|
Amad Diallo | 19 | 16 |
Tom Heaton | 38 | 22 |
Anthony Elanga | 56 | 36 |
Shola Shoretire | 74 | 47 |
Man Utd have also listed Tom Heaton among those who have a new number, although the goalkeeper is technically a new addition, having previously turned out with Aston Villa. The 35-year-old will take the No.22 jersey vacated by Sergio Romero. This ends a nine-year run of him sporting the No.1 shirt at Villa and Burnley.
Previously with United, he wore the No.38.
Meanwhile, the other players to be given new digits are younger members of the squad. Anthony Elanga has been promoted from the No.56 jersey to the No.36, while promising young attacker Shola Shoretire has become the No.47 after being the No.74 last term.
Finally, Man Utd have confirmed that they will wear their new home kit for the clash against Leeds in the Premier League.
