Arsenal have long enjoyed a reputation for developing young players, and despite not winning a Premier League title since 2004, their ability to produce good players has remained intact.

However, while the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and now, in the new season, William Saliba have earned their spot in Mikel Arteta’s first team, a number of the club’s young prospects haven’t yet made the step up.

As such, Arsenal have again loaned out a fair chunk of their first team squad to clubs all over Europe this summer, with the intention of picking up game time and developing as players before making a crack at the senior squad, or being sold.

Among the most notable loanees are former first-teamers Nuno Tavares and Pablo Mari, both declared surplus to requirements after a busy summer of transfers at the Emirates Stadium; as well as Nicolas Pepe, allowed to join Nice after managing a single Premier League goal last term.

How are they performing?

The 2022/23 season may still be young, but already enough football has been played to take stock of how the young Gunners have been getting on.

Folarin Balogun has hit the ground running at Ligue 1 side Reims, grabbing eight goals and two assists from 15 appearances in the French top flight.

Arsenal are likely to integrate him into the first-team picture next season, but if they don't, he will have many other suitors at this rate.

Also in France is Nuno Tavares, who has scored three times in 20 matches from left-back in a Marseille side that also includes former Arsenal men Alexis Sanchez, Matteo Guendouzi and Sead Kolasinac.

Nicolas Pepe is the third Arsenal man to arrive in Ligue 1 on loan this summer. The winger has joined another former Gunner in Aaron Ramsey at Nice, and has six goals and one assist from 18 games so far.

Pablo Mari, didn't make the biggest impact in north London and was doing well for Monza, helping their revival after a difficult start to the season with Mari playing eight times so far, scoring one. However, he was involved in a stabbing incident in October and will be out of action for some time.

Down in the Championship, Auston Trusty, Charlie Patino and Harry Clarke have all kicked off the season as regulars in their respective teams. Trusty is at Birmingham City and has played 22 times, scoring three goals. Patino is at Blackpool and has played 16 times, scoring two goals and setting up two. Clarke is at Stoke City and has played 14 matches, scoring twice.

And in Spain Real Oviedo will be hoping for big things from Marcelo Flores, who has already picked up three Mexico caps at the age of 18 after choosing the Tricolor over his nation of birth Canada, and England. He has played 13 times, assisting one goal.
