Liverpool should not meet Mohamed Salah's reported wage demands of £500,000 per week, in the opinion of former player Steve McManaman.

Rather than focusing on incoming transfers in the summer of 2021, with the exception of Ibrahima Konate, the Reds have instead put most of their efforts into retaining their current key players on extended deals.

Within the last few months, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson have all put pen to paper on new contracts.

Liverpool are also in negotiations with Salah and his agent over a new deal, as the Egyptian's current contract runs out in 2023.

Recent reports have suggested that Salah wants to become the highest-paid player in the club's history, with an eyewatering figure of half a million pounds per week mentioned in some publications.

While other former players like Jamie Carragher have told Liverpool to pay him what he wants, McManaman does not think Liverpool will or should pay any player than kind of money.

"I don’t think Liverpool would pay any player that much in wages," he told HorseRacing.net.

"It’s hard to comment on topics like these as there’s possibly five different publications publishing five different sets of figures, but if there’s any truth in the £500,000-a-week demand then I don’t think Liverpool should pay it."

Salah to Paris Saint-Germain?

Should Salah ultimately refuse to sign a new deal, then Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have been mentioned as the most likely destinations if Liverpool decide to cash in.

In reference to PSG in particular, McManaman has questioned why Salah would want to move to a supposed inferior tournament compared to the Premier League, especially when the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi might not be there in the long-term.

"Regarding the links with Salah to PSG, then most people would think that Ligue 1 is a step down from the Premier League wouldn’t they?" he asked.

"Kylian Mbappe won’t be there next season and if it’s a couple of years down the line then maybe Lionel Messi won’t be there either.

"Salah would be almost guaranteed success by winning the French league and the French Cup but Ligue 1 is certainly a lesser competition than the Premier League and that seems to hinder PSG in the Champions League."

Salah has scored 130 goals in 209 appearances for Liverpool and has made a flying start to the 2021/22 campaign.

In six appearances in all competitions, he has scored five goals and recorded two assists.
