Roma star Lorenzo Pellegrini has been a transfer target for Liverpool and Tottenham for several months, yet the Italian is soon set to be taken beyond the reach of the Premier League pair for now.

With a contract that expires next June, there had been hope from the English pair that they might be able to secure a deal for the 25-year-old, who previously turned out for Sassuolo, having started life in Roma’s youth team.

However, Pellegrini is set to sign a new deal with the Italian side that would all but end immediate speculation over where his future lies.

Why is Pellegrini such hot property?

Pellegrini has been one of the stars of the season so far for a Roma side that has been reinvigorated under new boss Jose Mourinho.

He has scored six goals and created two more in just eight matches for Roma this season, and it is little coincidence that his side struggled when the attacking midfielder was banned from Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Lazio – just their second reverse of the season.

Unsurprisingly, Roma are eager to tie him down for the foreseeable future.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Pellegrini is poised to sign a new long-term contract with the Serie A outfit.

Crucially, this deal will not have a minimum fee release clause installed in it. Presently, Pellegrini is available to speak to should any club launch a bid worth €30 million for the player.

It is reported that his strong relationship with Mourinho is one of the driving forces behind his desire to commit his future to the club.

This news will come as a blow to Liverpool and Tottenham, both of whom had been linked with a move for the Italy international.

He would have been appealing as a free agent next summer, and even at €30m he would have represented reasonable value: his FootballTransfers valuation stands at €33.1m.

Roma, though, appear likely to be able to enjoy Pellegrini’s talents a little longer, forcing Liverpool and Tottenham to take their search for midfield reinforcements elsewhere.
