And he has now hinted that he regrets choosing Schalke over the Red Devils when leaving Milan.

Boateng, the half-brother of former Bayern Munich defender Jeromme Boateng, spoke to the Hertha Berlin website after returning to the club on a one-year deal at the start of the season.

And the 34-year-old has a few regrets about his 16-year playing career.

What did Boateng say about Manchester Utd?

“I had the opportunity to move to Manchester United. I chose Germany - you saw what happened to me at Schalke," Boateng said.

Alex Ferguson was coming to the end of his triumphant career with Manchester Utd in 2013 and David Moyes was appointed his successor.

But instead, Boateng opted for Schalke where he endured a miserable spell and struggled to find his best form.

He was suspended at the end of the 2014/15 season with the club citing a "lack of mutual trust" and informing Boateng he could find a new club.

His contract was eventually terminated early in December 2015, freeing him up to re-join Milan on a short-term deal the following month.

"At some point I became intelligent. It started with Milan. I played with world stars and learned something from everyone,” he added.

The Ghana international played for Germany at youth level and believes his haste when leaving Hertha in 2005 for Tottenham, impacted on his senior Germany chances.

He said: "I was 20 years old, a regular - it was all good. I was at home, my family was here.

"I should have stayed here for another two or three years, then maybe I would have become a German national player."

Now back at Hertha, where it all began for Boateng, he has made eight appearances and helped the club to sit 13th in the Bundesliga.
