Real Madrid remain favourites to sign Paris Saint-Germain attacker Kylian Mbappe next summer, despite renewed reports that Liverpool are ready to move for the attacker.

Mbappe’s contract at PSG is up in June 2022, at which point he will be eligible to depart on a free transfer.

There appears to be little prospect of Mbappe signing a new deal with the Parc des Princes side and it is widely expected that he will move to Real Madrid.

Indeed, Los Blancos were so desperate to sign the World Cup winner last summer that president Florentino Perez has confirmed they made a €200 million bid for the attacker, which PSG rejected.

Liverpool to beat Real Madrid to Mbappe?

Defensa Central has put Real Madrid’s monopoly on this deal under scrutiny, however, and says that Liverpool want to blow them out of the water when it comes to Mbappe’s contract.

A €30 million-per-year deal is reportedly what Jurgen Klopp’s men are ready to pay the attacker.

It could be argued that this is good value given that Liverpool will not pay a transfer fee for Mbappe, but at the same time it could devastate the spirit in a squad in which togetherness and unity is a major asset.

If the Reds were to offer the striker such a deal, it would absolutely shatter their wage structure. Presently, Virgil van Dijk is Liverpool’s best paid player, earning around €13m per year. It is easy to see how Mbappe’s arrival at more than double that price, could kick off tension in the squad.

Furthermore, there would be a cascade effect, with the likes of Mohamed Salah, who is presently in contract talks, and other star names seeking significant jumps.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are a prudent side financially and are unlikely to partake in such a mega deal.

Real Madrid, who already boast several big earners, can rest easy knowing that Mbappe is likely to be theirs if they want him.
