Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes continues to be linked with a January transfer to Premier League outfit Arsenal.

With little over a week before the transfer window shuts, the Gunners are scrambling to find additional midfield reinforcements.

A loan deal for Juventus midfielder Arthur appears possible, while Guimaraes represents another legitimate option for the Emirates side.

Indeed, there is a strong argument that Guimaraes is a man in better form than the Juve player.

Since the beginning of the year, his level has been superb.

He kicked 2022 off with a superb all-action performance against Paris Saint-Germain, in which he was the best player on the field for Lyon, while he has built on that with back-to-back solid displays against Troyes and Saint-Etienne.

Once again he was OL’s standout figure in Friday’s derby against Saint-Etienne, a fixture in which huge pressure is placed on both sets of players. Guimaraes has been criticised in the past for his failure to show up in the big games, but just as he did against PSG, he excelled in this outing.

In what was largely a forgettable match, he shone thanks to the volume of possession he won and the manner in which he was able to set the tempo of the game with the ball at his feet. Even if his influence dropped in the second half, he fashioned a big opportunity for Tino Kadewere.

“Bruno Guimaraes would be a superb signing for Arsenal if they can make it happen,” former Manchester United and Brazil star Kleberson told Paddy Power. “He’s young and I’ve been following him since he was playing for Athletico Paranaense. He’s also had some magnificent moments on the pitch for Lyon.

“Bruno is a really smart player, he can pass in between the lines, he has a good understanding of the field when he needs to defend in space and he’s talented.”

Of course, the importance that Brazil international Guimaraes has shown he has for Lyon in recent weeks is not necessarily a good thing for Arsenal as it will only strengthen Lyon’s resolve to keep a man who has been their outstanding figure since the beginning of the year.
