Donny van de Beek is finally free of Manchester United – at least until the summer, when his loan deal with Everton expires.

The Netherlands international forward was left frustrated by his lack of game time at Old Trafford after arriving from Ajax to much fanfare in 2020.

Indeed, he might have left to Everton on loan in the summer but performed a U-turn amid apparent assurances from then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he would be given additional playing time.

That did not materialise under Solskjaer, but when he was sacked there was renewed hope that Van de Beek would finally be given his opportunity to shine under Ralf Rangnick. The German, though, has similarly overlooked the Dutchman, with Fred and Scott McTominay given preference in the midfield.

Despite his lack of playing time, Van de Beek is something of a favourite among the Man Utd support, with many supporters taking to social media to complain at the treatment that the midfielder has had to endure at the club.

What Man Utd fans think of Van de Beek move

While attacker Marcus Rashford took to Twitter to wish his colleague good luck, it was noted by some supporters that the same privilege was not afforded by the club.

Most fans are just concerned that Man Utd have made the wrong call with Van de Beek and will live to regret allowing the Dutchman to leave – much like they did with Jesse Lingard when he went to West Ham last January. Many, too, are hoping that he proves his parent club wrong.

Meanwhile, there is also a feeling of disappointment and frustration that Man Utd have not done more this January.

Donny van de Beek has played 50 times for Man Utd, scoring two goals.
