It seems every person in English football is just waiting for Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard to leave the club this month.

With less than six months remaining on his contract at Old Trafford and no sign of game time in Ralf Rangnick’s side, a move would seemingly make sense for all involved.

Linked with a potential move to West Ham and Newcastle United, the latter perhaps makes more sense considering the former’s current tussle with Man Utd for a top four finish.

Indeed, Newcastle’s desperation to sign a forward was illustrated perfectly when Alan Shearer took to Twitter to give a one-word answer to the question of Lingard’s suitability for the St James’ Park side.

Why Newcastle need Lingard

However beneath the constant transfer rumours and speculation surrounding one of English football’s most high-profile stars, there is plenty of solid proof to suggest that Lingard could make an instant impact in Eddie Howe’s side.

Last season Lingard was in a similarly frustrating position at Man Utd and decided to go out on loan to West Ham for the second half of the league campaign, where he bagged no less than nine goals and five assists in just 16 games.

Not only was that a remarkable return in its own right, but it showed just how quickly Lingard can turn on his goal threat in the Premier League. Which is undoubtedly what Newcastle have been sorely missing for much of this season.

Indeed, the club’s top goalscorer for this season is currently Callum Wilson, with just six goals from 15 appearances. Newcastle desperately need some inspiration up front and Lingard should be able to provide that.
