Chelsea do not believe that Andreas Christensen will sign a new contract with them and will instead transfer to Barcelona as a free agent.

Christensen is out of contract in June and talks over a new deal appear to have stalled.

Meanwhile, club-mate Cesar Azpilicueta has been strongly linked with a switch to Barca in recent weeks, with the Spaniard also heading for free agency in the summer.

Sky Sport Deutschland believe that Christensen could well be joining him at Camp Nou, with its report indicating that Chelsea’s bosses "expect" the Denmark international to sign for the Catalans.

It is not just the Chelsea board who believe that the 25-year-old will be off – it is also reported that many of his team-mates think that a deal will be done.

Barcelona’s financial issues mean that they are having to work extensively in the free agent market at present, so it makes sense that they would chase a player like Christensen, particularly since there is a chronic lack of depth in their defensive areas.

Are there other options for Christensen?

The player’s entourage have not dismissed the possibility that Christensen could go to Bayern Munich in the summer.

It has not been dismissed either that Christensen may stay with Chelsea, but this becomes an increasingly distant prospect as the expiration date of his contract nears.

“For Andreas, from my point of view, everybody wants the same thing. The coach wants the same thing, the club wants the same thing and the player wants the same thing,” Thomas Tuchel said in November.

At that time, he added: “Hopefully and obviously I expect some good news in the next days but every case is different.”

Three months on, and that good news on Christensen’s contract has yet to arrive for Chelsea, who see Barcelona increasingly looming in this case.
