Why furious Conte has issued Spurs quit threat
Antonio Conte’s position at Tottenham looks as fragile as ever following a 1-0 loss to Burnley on Wednesday that he described as a “disaster”.
Spurs have had numerous opportunities to close the gap on the top four but instead have endured four defeats in their last five league matches that have left them a distant seven points from Manchester United, albeit with two games in hand.
Nevertheless, Conte issued a clear warning after the Turf Moor encounter that he is willing to leave his role if Tottenham feel it is for the good of the club.
What did Conte say?
“No one expect this type of situation, the club, the players, the fans. I came in to try to improve the situation with Tottenham and maybe I am not so good to improve the situation. It is very frustrating,” he said.
“It is the right moment to see this situation clearly and make an assessment. I am really frustrated.
“I am too honest to close my eyes. Maybe there is something wrong. I will take my responsibility. I am open. I want to help, not just take my salary.
‘This is the first time in my life that maybe I am not so good. Spurs called me to improve the situation. I want to finish the season, my salary is good, but I am not this type of person. I have ambition.
“I hate to lose. We lost FOUR games in the last five. This is unacceptable. If we continue this way, maybe we finish tenth, 12, 13th. I think no-one deserves this type of situation.”
Why is he so angry?
Firstly, Conte is angry with Tottenham’s erratic form. After producing an excellent performance to beat Manchester City at the weekend, they crashed to a loss against an opponent at the opposite end of the league table.
Despite his words on Wednesday, he does not feel entirely responsible for the situation. When he arrived at Tottenham, he was promised an ambitious project in which his aims in the transfer market would be backed.
However, he was left furious with the way that Tottenham’s owners handled the January window.
“What happened in January is not easy. Four players left in January. Four important players for Tottenham, two have arrived,” he complained in an interview with Sky Italia.
“So even numerically instead of strengthening yourself, you may have, on paper, weakened.”
Conte has a history of disputes with previous employers and notably walked away from Chelsea on the first day of pre-season training in 2018. His time at Tottenham is heading for a similarly explosive conclusion.
