Chelsea could try and bring Marc Guehi back to a the club this summer a year after he was sold to Crystal Palace.

Guehi is just one of a long line of hugely talented youngsters who grew up in the Chelsea youth academy.

The defender was one of the most impressive players in the English Championship last season and helped Swansea into the playoffs.

The decision by Chelsea to sell him to Crystal Palace for €21 million (£18m) caused some uproar with fans from Stamford Bridge, who believe he is set for the very top.

He has been key to Crystal Palace's impressive campaign under new manager Patrick Vieira and recently made his debut for the England national team.

Chelsea are facing a defensive exodus this summer, as Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azplicueta are all set to depart at the expiration of their respective contracts.

Rudiger has been linked with various clubs including Bayern Munich, Juventus and Manchester United.

Christensen has already apparently agreed to move to Barcelona, and Azpilicueta could follow.

Chelsea have been unable to renew the contracts of these players due to the current situation with regards to the club being up for sale after the sanctions imposed on owner Roman Abramovich.

How Guehi could return to Chelsea

At the moment, Chelsea aren't allowed to buy players either, but should the ownership issue be resolved it is likely this ban will be lifted by the summer.

The Blues will need to buy numerous new defenders in the next transfer window and Guehi represents an option.

Chelsea do not have a straight buy-back clause in the deal with Crystal Palace, but they have first refusal on any return transfer if another team tables a transfer bid, as explained by the Sun's Tom Barclay, who told GiveMeSport:

“I don’t think they do have a buyback clause.

“My understanding is they have a clause, which kicks in next summer. If another club makes a bid and it gets accepted then they have the right to match that bid and have it accepted.

“His story at Chelsea might not definitely be over. But it’s not as simple as Tino Livramento, for example, where if they just offer close to £38million, they can get him back.”
