The 20 richest clubs in the world
Manchester City are the richest football club in the world, according to the Deloitte Football Money League 2022.
"Every year, DFML profiles the financial performance of the highest revenue generating clubs in world football. This year’s edition is a landmark publication for more reasons than one, as it marks 25 years of DFML and covers the first season (2020/21) to be impacted by COVID-19 from start to finish.
"Published less than twelve months after the end of the 2020/21 season, the Money League is the most contemporary and reliable independent analysis of the featured clubs’ relative financial performance."
Man City are only the fourth club in history to top the list after Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
The Premier League defending champions generated a revenue of €644.9 million over the past year, more than second-place Real Madrid, who generated €640.7m.
Deloitte reports that Covid-19 did have an impact on revenues generated for clubs around Europe as the money made from match days obviously declined. However, revenues were still maintained or even increased thanks to blockbuster broadcast deals.
Only €111m was made from matchday revenue which accounts for just 1% of total revenue gained in the 2020/21 season.
The Premier League has broadcast deals vastly superior to any other league in the world and that is reflected in the top 20 as there are no less than 11 sides from the English top-flight represented.
