How Man Utd’s 2021-22 sales have performed this season
Manchester United have always been known as a club that enjoy spending money and buying some of the world’s best players when called upon.
However, the Old Trafford side have also made a smart business out of selling players that either struggle to perform at the famous old stadium or have simply not worked out in Manchester.
This season has been no exception, with the Premier League giants selling squad players or loaning out unwanted stars and inexperienced youngsters. So how have Man Utd’s sales done this season?
Daniel James - Leeds United (6/10)
At just 24 years of age, Daniel James was undoubtedly signed by Leeds United last summer as a long-term project but fans of the club would be forgiven for wondering whether he was really worth the £26 million their team spent on him.
To date, James has been a regular starter for the Elland Road club, but he’s only managed four goals and a further four assists in 28 games and was part of an underperforming team that eventually led to Marcelo Bielsa losing his job.
Andreas Pereira - Flamengo (5/10)
The South American season has only just kicked off but Andreas Pereira has already nailed down a start spot for Flamengo in his preferred central midfield position. However, after just seven appearances for his new club, it’s hard to decipher whether this move will end up working out or not.
Azel Tuanzebe - Napoli and Aston Villa
There’s little doubt that Azel Tuanzebe’s hopes of picking up game time this season haven’t exactly gone to plan. In the first half of the season the young defender struggled to nail down a regular spot at Aston Villa and after returning to the club in January to move out on loan to Napoli, he then got sidelined by a serious injury. To date, the defender has managed just 815 minutes of football this season.
Anthony Martial - Sevilla (6/10)
After demanding a transfer from Man Utd in January, Anthony Martial was duly shipped out on loan to Sevilla and so far the French forward has had a lively if not entirely spectacular time in Spain.
Martial kicked things off with a bang by picking up an assist in his second game for the club and even scored on his Europa League debut for Sevilla, but has gone a little quite since then and missed three games through a muscle injury. Still, one goal and one assist from seven games isn’t terrible.
Donny van de Beek - Everton (5/10)
After a truly miserable 18 months at Man Utd, Donny van de Beek was offered a chance at redemption when he moved on loan to Everton in the January window.
However, despite being a regular starter in Frank Lampard’s side, the Dutch midfielder has struggled to make a huge impact on a team that had lost four successive games before bagging a 1-0 win over Newcastle on Thursday. Unfortunately, the midfielder missed out on that important win through illness.
Amad Diallo - Rangers
After making a surprise move to Rangers on loan in January, Amad Diallo then found himself in the Scottish club's starting XI against Ross County and then Celtic, with mixed results.
In six games, the young forward picked up a goal on his debut but has since gone cold north of the border and now finds himself sitting on the bench most weeks in Glasgow.
Brandon Williams - Norwich (6/10)
Although Norwich have undoubtedly struggled in the Premier League this season, Brandon Williams has gotten plenty out of his time on loan at the club and become a regular starter for Dean Smith’s side.
Facundo Pellistri - Alaves (1/10)
There’s no doubt that Facundo Pellistri made the move to La Liga side Alaves with high hopes of regular game time and while that was the case at the start of the season, poor performances from the young forward have since seen him drop to the bench and struggle for game time. In 20 appearances for Alaves, Pellistri has yet to register a single goal or assist.
Tahith Chong - Birmingham City (6/10)
Despite being ruled out for most of the season with a groin injury that required surgery in August last year, when he has been able to play Tahith Chong has been an impressive player for Birmingham City, with two goals and four assists in 19 games and a regular start for the Championship club.
