Aurelien Tchouameni of Monaco showed why he has been linked with a summer transfer to Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid with a superb display for France against Ivory Coast on Friday.

In the absence of Kylian Mbappe, it was Tchouameni who shone for Didier Deschamps’ side, ensuring the headlines at full-time were all his thanks to a last-minute header from a corner to secure a 2-1 victory. It was a strike that not only showed his footballing qualities, but also his drive to win even in friendly matches.

He was only playing because N’Golo Kante was absent because of personal issues yet showed himself to have the ability to step into the Chelsea star’s boots.

On the occasion of his eighth cap, he played like a veteran, slotting into the Kante role for France seamlessly. This meant that he did much of the defensive work and allowed Paul Pogba to dictate the pace of the game. Winning 12 of the 16 duels he competed in underlined his qualities.

“The team helped me a lot to show my personality,” he commented after the game, yet the reverse was also true. The balance that he brought to the team allowed Pogba to continue shining on the international scene, as he often does when he plays shoulder to shoulder with Kante.

“I try to stay calm. It’s true that it’s beautiful what’s happening to me, but as I said from the start, I have different objectives and, for example, scoring my first goal was a target. Now let’s move on,” he added.

But if he succeeds in staying calm, there is certain to be a storm increasingly around him.

Who will Tchouameni sign for?

Tchouameni surely cannot remain too much longer at Monaco. The club is in a state of flux and is likely to miss out on Champions League football next season – surely a requirement for any team that the 22-year-old joins.

PSG have been linked with a summer move for the midfielder, who would bring many attributes they are missing, but there are numerous giants from all around Europe also monitoring his progress, not least Man Utd and Real Madrid.

Whichever club he winds up at, Tchouameni will prove a gem.
