Arsenal, Man Utd and Memphis Depay’s possible Premier League transfer destinations
Memphis Depay’s future at Barcelona is not secure and, according to reports, Premier League clubs have been on the hunt for the Netherlands international attacker.
Memphis only moved to Barca last summer on a free transfer after a successful spell with Lyon, but he has not elevated his game sufficiently to suggest that he will stay at the club.
A report from Sport states that he has expressed his wish to remain at Camp Nou, but Fabrizio Romano reports that several Premier League outfits have already enquired over the availability of the 28-year-old.
But which clubs may have taken an interest in him?
Manchester United
If Memphis was to return to Manchester United, it would be a sensational move given he left the club having been branded a flop. Reports from Spain suggest that incoming Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag has requested the player, but it would be an incredibly brave move given that the former PSV star has ultimately failed in his two previous stints at elite clubs.
If Memphis was to return to Man Utd and fail to sparkle, it would immediately cast doubts over Ten Hag’s judgement. It would be a high-risk, limited-reward deal for the Red Devils, so it seems unlikely.
Arsenal
Arsenal are in the market for new attackers in the summer, and they may feel that Memphis’ ability to play a variety of roles would be beneficial to them.
Certainly, he plays the type of exciting football their supporters would appreciate, but those nagging doubts over his difficult stints at Man Utd and Barcelona mean that the price would have to be right for them to consider a deal.
Newcastle
Memphis would represent a coup for Newcastle. He has shown previously at Lyon that when he is made the centrepiece of his team, he can be a devastating player, and he may get the same opportunity at an improving Magpies outfit.
He would certainly offer an upgrade in terms of his quality and would also raise the profile of the St James’ Park outfit.
Leicester
It has been a somewhat disappointing season for Leicester, a club that has grown used to fighting for European football in recent years. They may yet get a Europa League spot via the Conference League, but they will want to be more competitive domestically and a player like Memphis would offer them another exciting attacking player with elite-level experience.
Everton
If Everton survive the Premier League relegation battle, they will need a reboot in the summer, and a player like Memphis would provide them a focal point to build an attack around. As previously mentioned, he has excelled when being the centrepiece of a team, and if the Toffees were able to extract such quality from him, he would be a tremendous asset.
