Man Utd vs PSG: Who will win the race for Nkunku transfer?
Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are the two leading contenders to sign Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig this summer, according to Bild.
The France international, who has developed into a versatile attacker with the Bundesliga outfit, has caught the eye with a succession of sparkling displays this season.
Having scored 20 goals and created another 13, he is widely credited with being Germany’s outstanding player this season – surpassing even the likes of Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham, as well as Bayern Munich’s prolific Robert Lewandowski.
Nkunku, then, promises to be a coup for whichever clubs pays the reported €80 million that Leipzig are after.
Can Man Utd beat PSG to Nkunku?
Manchester United, though, are at a low ebb. Such is the position that they find themselves in, they could be in the Europa Conference League when Erik ten Hag takes command of the team in the summer. This will make the club a difficult sell for players there is major competition for.
Nkunku falls into this bracket, particularly as PSG are interested in him. Is it realistic to suggest that he could favour a move to Manchester United?
Certainly, the draw of the Premier League is to the advantage of the Old Trafford side, but otherwise they have little they can offer Nkunku that PSG cannot.
The Ligue 1 champions can give the player lavish wages, the hope of winning the Champions League and, of course, a familiar environment, having come through the club’s youth set up before moving to Leipzig in 2019 for €13m after playing 78 first-team games.
On the other hand, Man Utd’s project is starting at a lower base level, with the outcome uncertain given the recent instability around the club. It remains to be seen that if the optimism around the support is echoed in their summer transfer targets.
Speaking in February to L’Equipe, Nkunku was asked if he would consider a return to PSG. “It will be studied like all the other possibilities,” he replied.
Man Utd, then, will have an opportunity to plead their case, but it looks like PSG are better placed to seal Nkunku’s transfer from RB Leipzig.
