Tammy Abraham: Roma striker makes Serie A history in debut season after Chelsea transfer

Tammy Abraham finished off a remarkable debut season with Roma by grabbing a double against Torino in Serie A on Friday and finishing off the season with more goals than any other Englishman in the history of the competition.
Abraham grabbed his 16th and 17th of the campaign to ensure Jose Mourinho’s side finish sixth in the standings and, therefore, qualify for next season’s Europa League.
Abraham has given himself a strong chance of finishing in the top five marksmen in Serie A this season, though there are a handful of players just behind him who could draw level or overtake should they have a productive final day.

Equally, he has fallen short of the three elite strikers in Italy: Ciro Immobile, Dusan Vlahovic and Lautaro Martinez, who are the only players this term to have broken the 20-goal barrier.
He justified the faith that the Portuguese put in him when he was signed for €40 milllion from Chelsea last summer, having been made peripheral by Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge.
Why Abraham was dumped by Chelsea
Chelsea took a calculated risk when they offloaded Abraham last summer. He had become their third-choice No.9 behind Timo Werner and Olivier Giroud, while the Blues were busy preparing for the arrival of Romelu Lukaku – a move that clearly has not worked out for anyone involved.
Though his instincts in the box have always been impressive, his all-round game was not refined enough for Tuchel.
It has not all been easy for Abraham in Serie A, either. Although he made a quick start to life in Italy by scoring one and creating two in his first two goals, by mid-December he had only four league strikes to his name.
A double against Atalanta kickstarted his campaign shortly before Christmas and saw him go on a run of 11 goals in 13 league matches. However, he quickly cooled off following that run, going seven games without a goal before Friday’s concluding match.
Until Abraham is better able to find a more consistent level, clubs like Chelsea will likely continue to look elsewhere for their centre-forward options.
