Erik ten Hag is set to begin work as Manchester United manager on Monday, having completed the Eredivisie season over at Ajax.

The Dutchman’s move to Old Trafford was confirmed in April, and he said his focus was purely on helping Ajax win the league title, and having done that last week, he has now turned his attention to the task in England.

Ten Hag terminated his contract at Ajax six weeks earlier than he was due and decided against going on Ajax’s post-season tour to Curacao, instead choosing to go to Manchester to start his work with the Red Devils.

Over the last few days, Ten Hag and representatives from Manchester United have been in talks over his initial weeks, with football director John Murtough visiting the coach in Amsterdam last week.

The two have had talks over Ten Hag’s coaching staff, and it’s believed that Ten Hag’s current assistant at Ajax, Mitchell van der Gaag will also be joining him at Old Trafford.

In addition to that, Ten Hag also wants Steve McClaren to be on his staff, with the pair’s previous working relationship at Twente as well as the Englishman’s knowledge of Manchester United and English football being handy.

After Ajax’s final game of the season against Vitesse, Ten Hag spoke about the task in hand and why he was cutting his holiday short to start work at Manchester United.

"Tomorrow there will be a party with the Ajax staff, but I am not going to Curaçao. I think that's understandable. There is a lot of work to do there [at Manchester United]. That is the case with every club," Ten Hag said.

"A number of things still need to be organised in the staff and also in the selection. We will be working intensively on this from tomorrow," he added.

Ten Hag joins Manchester United having spent four-and-a-half years at Ajax, where he won three league titles, two Dutch Cups and reached the Champions League semi-final in 2019, amongst other achievements.
