Antonio Rudiger is set to join Real Madrid soon, after it was confirmed last month that he wouldn’t extend his stay at Chelsea.

The German defender’s contract expires this summer, and he has refused an extension, with a view of moving abroad with the newly-crowned Spanish champions the top favourites to sign him.

Rudiger has been crucial to Chelsea since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel in January 2021, as they went on to win the Champions League later that year.

WHO ARE THE MOST VALUABLE PLAYERS IN THE WORLD?

Tuchel has spoken of Rudiger’s importance in the team’s dressing room: “He is a key figure and will stay that way until the end of the season, but it is disappointing,

“We will miss him a lot. He gives courage in the dressing room. The kind everyone is afraid of, but the kind to play 50-55 games at an outstanding level.”

When will Rudiger's move to Real Madrid be confirmed?

Now, it’s believed that Rudiger will sign his Real Madrid contract in the coming days and the move will officially be confirmed soon.

Real Madrid are looking to bolster their defensive options for next season, adding to their team that already has Eder Militao, David Alaba and Nacho Fernandes.

The club have long targeted Kylian Mbappe, and the move for the French forward looks likely to go ahead this summer, but they realized they needed to strengthen in other areas as well.

Along with Rudiger and potentially Mbappe, Los Blancos have also been eager to improve at right-back and in midfield, with the likes of Pedro Porro and Aurelien Tchouameni linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

That would give them a squad worthy of competing for the Champions League again next season and maintain their domestic dominance in Spain.

For now, though, the signing of Chelsea’s Rudiger is an impressive deal, and coming at no transfer fee, it’s another example of shrewd business conducted by the record Spanish champions.
