Gavi's uncertain Barcelona future gives Liverpool hope
Barcelona still have work to do in order to secure a new contract for midfielder Gavi, potentially opening the door to Liverpool to get a deal over the line.
At 17 years old, Gavi was one of the few bright spots in what was a difficult 2021-22 season for the Catalan club.
He broke into the team and immediately established himself as a key figure, making 34 La Liga appearances.
Meanwhile, on the international stage, he also shone in the Nations League finals with Spain.
This rapid rise to prominence has not been matched by his contract, which presently expires in June 2023.
A €50 million minimum fee release clause in his present deal means that he is vulnerable to being poached by one of Europe’s biggest clubs. Liverpool, for example, have an interest in him.
Although Gavi’s camp have stated that the player has no intention, it is nevertheless cause for Barcelona concern, particularly as it was expected that they would have reached an agreement last week.
Gavi to Liverpool?
Liverpool have reportedly offered Gavi the chance to quadruple his wages, with Barcelona's contract offer to the wonderkid being described as 'abysmal'.
The Spanish side have offered the 17-year-old a deal worth €2m a year but he is understood to be seeking a four-year contract that would increase his salary up to €6m in the third year.
Gavi has multiple offers, though Liverpool are said to have the strongest proposal and are allegedly willing to pay the young midfielder €9m a year.

Jurgen Klopp's side have already strengthened in the transfer market, signing Darwin Nunez from Benfica for €100m.
However, The Reds are in need of another midfielder, despite the obvious quality of Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita and Fabinho,
James Milner has signed for another season, but his career is coming to a close.
Whereas, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been unable to remain fit enough to contribute much in a Liverpool shirt.
Gavi would add youth to an ageing squad, with the ability to perform well already - after a period of adjustment to the English game.
