Frenkie de Jong has been linked with a move to Manchester United from Barcelona, but it’s one he’s not entirely convinced by, with the Dutchman seemingly preferring other options.

The two clubs have been in negotiations over the midfielder for about two months, with De Jong being new coach Erik ten Hag’s top transfer priority.

However, there has been a reluctance to move from De Jong, with the Barcelona man playing at his dream club and wishing to continue staying there for the long-run.

Barcelona, though, are eager to move him on to improve their financial condition and allow the transfers of other players in the window.

De Jong prefers two others over Manchester United

For De Jong, there are also other factors that make Manchester United a relatively unattractive prospect, including the fact that they won’t have Champions League football.

He prefers a move to other destinations, such as United’s Premier League rivals Chelsea, or even Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.

At both, he will have the chance to compete for trophies, something he feels he doesn’t have at Manchester United, who have been erratic in recent seasons and will be set for another new beginning under Ten Hag.

Furthermore, the two clubs have a better structure than Manchester United, as evident by their performances and success in recent seasons.

Should he move to Manchester United, De Jong will have the opportunity to reunite with Ten Hag, with whom he had a great relationship, but there isn’t much motivation to move there apart from that.

De Jong also believes London and Munich are more attractive cities to live in than Manchester, and that is also a factor in this transfer saga.

United and Barcelona have agreed a fee, but it’s come down to the situation with De Jong’s deferred wages from Blaugrana, which is holding up this move from reaching a conclusion.

There is a total of €17 million that needs to be paid out to De Jong as the club and player reached an agreement over a deferred payment due to their tough financial situation.
