Manchester United have had one of the summer’s longest transfer sagas involving Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, and it’s set to drag on for a little longer.

The situation is that the English club still want the player, and Barcelona are open to selling, but owe De Jong his deferred wages in order for the player to accept a departure.

Manager Erik ten Hag has made De Jong his priority midfield target for the upcoming season, and is willing to wait in order to get his man, with the season starting on 7 August.

However, Barcelona have now taken steps to pay back De Jong his deferred wage, as they make a move in order to get the player sold.

How much have Barcelona offered De Jong?

The Catalan club owe the Dutchman €17m, which came as a result of De Jong agreeing to a deferral during the club’s difficult financial period when Covid affected their finances.

Barcelona, though, have made a resolution, however, that is still around €10m less than what De Jong is owed by the club, as they hope he will forego the remaining amount.

Manchester United have agreed a fee of about £70m with Barcelona for the transfer of the player, and it is now up to De Jong to see if the move will be completed.

The player has been a part of Barcelona’s pre-season tour of the United States, featuring in matches against Inter Miami and Real Madrid over the last week.

However, he has been playing in his rather unusual position of centre-back, and coach Xavi thinks he will continue playing there, which is seen as a ploy to get him to leave.

Manchester United will be hoping to get this deal over the line, in order to have the player available and training with them as soon as possible, as the season is close to starting.
