FootballTransfers exclusively revealed that De Jong wants to move to Man Utd this summer, but that Chelsea are waiting in the wings to take advantage should they falter.

However, Catalan outlet Sport has published an opinion piece listing 10 different reasons as to why De Jong will not complete a transfer to Man Utd.

It should be noted that this is purely a speculative piece and is publicised as so, but nevertheless it makes for interesting reading, giving a Spanish perspective on why there is still confidence that the Netherlands international will reject the chance to move to Old Trafford.

Here are the 10 reasons:

  • 1. He has just bought a house in Barcelona.
  • 2. His fianceée Mikky Kiemeney is happily settled in Barcelona and does not want to leave.
  • 3. His dream has always been to make himself a success at Barca.
  • 4. Manchester United will not play in the Champions League next season.
  • 5. Man Utd are a team that is perceived to suffer from bad luck.

  • 6. This is not the time to move to Man Utd because of their on-field difficulties.
  • 7. He believes he is good enough to be able to do whatever head coach Xavi wants him to do.

  • 8. He is happy with the good salary that he has at Barcelona.
  • 9. He is unhappy about reading transfer speculation in the papers because he wants to stay at the club.
  • 10. There is no contact between De Jong and Manchester United – there has only been communication with Barcelona.

The list certainly makes compelling reading, but among the 10 reasons are several that are questionable.

De Jong may not be close to Manchester United yet, but that’s not to say the Barcelona midfielder will not wind up at Old Trafford before the close of the summer transfer window.
