Some baulked at the notion the Chelsea would pay Everton £60 million for Anthony Gordon. Since being linked with the Blues, the England under-21 man has scored two goals in two games.

Chelsea have spent big since Todd Boehly replaced Roman Abramovich in ownership of the club in May, spending nearly £168 million on the likes of Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly.

The imminent arrival of Wesley Fofana from Leicester will take that number to nearly £250m, but his plus £80m fee - a world record for a centre-back - will be the only one bigger than Gordon's.

Gordon, the England under-21 winger who until this season had four Everton goals in 60 games to his name. £60 million. For potential.

But he is beginning to fulfil that potential. The pacy attacker averaged 23 pressures, two blocks and two tackles per 90 minutes for Everton last season, and those underlying stats are beginning to be backed up by more headline-grabbing ones.

Gordon has led the line for Everton in recent games with Richarlison gone and Dominic Calvert-Lewin injured, and he has seized his chance.

Goalscorer Gordon

Gordon raced onto Conor Coady's through-ball to score, helping Everton to a 1-1 draw at Brentford on Saturday, and he was at it again on Tuesday, firing the Toffees to same result against Leeds.

Former Chelsea star Frank Lampard, now in charge at Everton, is desperate to keep his nascent star.

"He's not a robot and all this attention is difficult," explained Lampard, who cost Chelsea £11m in swapping West Ham for Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2001.

"I understand that, I was that ambitious young player. That's the beauty of Anthony. Hard-working. He wants to be better.

"Yeah, and I played three-and-a-half, four seasons for West Ham, so there's my answer for Anthony. He's played one for us," Lampard then said when pressed on Gordon's future.

A Chelsea transfer will ultimately be out of Lampard's hands, but at the rate Gordon's going, £60m could end up proving a bargain.
