Timo Werner has completed his move back to former club RB Leipzig from Chelsea after just two seasons at the West London club.

Leipzig have spent a reported €20 million plus add-ons to re-sign the forward after selling him for double that in 2020. Werner has signed a four-year deal at the club, meaning he's in contract until 2026.

The Germany international will wear the number 11 shirt at Leipzig.

Werner, 26, joined Chelsea after netting 28 Bundesliga goals in the 2019-20 season, with Frank Lampard convincing him to move to Stamford Bridge over joining countryman Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

However, during his time at the Blues, Werner was unable to rediscover his best form, netting just 23 goals in 89 appearances across two season.

He did, though, play a key role in their Champions League victory in 2021 under Thomas Tuchel. But, last season he was restricted to a rotation role, with fellow Germany international Kai Havertz preferred more often than not.

Werner's goodbye message

The player took to Twitter to say farewell: "Today marks the end of my journey with Chelsea FC. I am incredibly grateful for the time I spent at this special club.

"At this point I would like to express my appreciation for my teammates, the coaches and staff, and especially for you, the special supporters of Chelsea Football Club.

"I felt so much love and support throughout the last two years and I will never forget how you guys stood behind me in good and challenging times!

"We lifted trophies like the Champions League together and I will always remember the song you wrote and chanted for me.

"I'm already looking forward to hopefully playing at Stamford Bridge again one day!

"See you soon, Timo."

Leipzig's record goalscorer returns

Werner's 95 goals for RB Leipzig is the most any player has scored for the club, and he will now be given the chance to extend his lead at the top of the standings.
