Chelsea have reportedly explored the possibility of signing Manchester United captain Harry Maguire this summer as Thomas Tuchel looks to bolster his backline.

The Blues have lost Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfer, while Malang Sarr has joined AS Monaco on a season-long loan. Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella have arrived from Napoli and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively, but Tuchel is still keen to add one more centre-back to his roster.

It's become clear that Leicester City star Wesley Fofana is Chelsea's first choice, and the Blues have been buoyed by news that the Frenchman has asked Brendan Rodgers to be left out of the Foxes' squad to face Southampton in their third Premier League fixture of the 2022-23 campaign.

However, while Fofana remains the priority, Chelsea have made a surprise enquiry to Man Utd about the potential of acquiring Maguire before the transfer window shuts, according to the Daily Mail's Sami Mokbel. The report details that Chelsea have brought up the possibility of signing Maguire as part of Man Utd’s efforts to sign Christian Pulisic.

Antony and Cody Gakpo are both being pursued by Man Utd as Erik ten Hag looks to fix the club's issues out wide, but Pulisic is also an option, and Chelsea have reportedly begun exploring the possibility of including Maguire in a deal for the American to move to Old Trafford.

Maguire may be dropped by Ten Hag for Man Utd's clash against Liverpool, with Raphael Varane potentially set to take his place in the starting XI. Ten Hag has kept Maguire as Man Utd's club captain, but the Red Devils may use Chelsea's reported interest to offload the England international after a disappointing 12 months.
