Jonathan David continues to show Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea what he can do
Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea will be keeping a keen eye on the performances of Lille attacker Jonathan David ahead of the January transfer window.
All three clubs were in the market for a striker in the summer, but of the three only Chelsea landed a natural centre-forward in the form of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – hardly a long-term attacking solution at Stamford Bridge.
To that end, Canada international star David could be a player on the move during the next transfer period, particularly if he can impress at the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Indeed, it came as something of a shock he was not more heavily linked with a move away in the summer give Lille’s failure to reach Europe last season.
Nevertheless, the 22-year-old has been in hot form in Ligue 1 since the start of the season, bagging five goals and two assists in eight matches.
He has regularly given the Premier League’s big clubs a reminder of his talents, with Manchester United and Arsenal having both previously been linked with a move for him.

The latest nudge came during Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Toulouse when he opened the goal with a brilliant strike. There appeared little on when he gathered the ball on the left of the box, and even after he beat Rasmus Nicolaisen with a clever jink the angle still seemed one improbable to score from. Nevertheless, he picked out the top corner brilliantly.

Remarkably, the season was only three minutes old and David had both a goal and an assist to his credit. Before 40 seconds had been played, Benjamin Andre had fired low into the net following his intelligent flick.
Less than two minutes later, the Canadian was on target himself. Gathering the ball on the right of the pitch, he dribbled into the box before cutting onto his left foot and curling a shot into the far corner.
A third would follow before the break. This was a much simpler finish as he took advantage of a turnover high on the field to be set up for a tap in by debutant Remy Cabella.
David has signed off for the September international break on a high, and should he continue this form much longer, clubs will be banging on his door to sign him in the January transfer window.
