Manchester United have once again set their sights on Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, according to reports, after missing out on Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong.

The Red Devils have been chasing Dutch international De Jong for the entirety of the summer transfer window, but a deal is now looking increasingly unlikely to transpire, with Man Utd forced to turn to alternatives to their number one transfer target.

New head coach Erik ten Hag, who has arrived from Ajax, was desperate to add De Jong to his ranks, but has so far been forced to settle with the summer acquisitions of Tyrell Malacia from Feyernoord, Christian Eriksen from Brentford, and Lisandro Martinez from his former club Ajax.

However, action has been taken following the side's opening day defeat to Graham Potter's Brighton & Hove Albion. The Seagulls ran out 2-1 winners at Old Trafford thanks to a Pascal Gross brace, and that result has sparked Man Utd back into transfer market action.

They launched a bid for Bologna's former Stoke and West Ham forward Marko Arnautovic before pulling out of a deal, while a €17 million fee has been agreed with Juventus for the sale of France international Adrien Rabiot. However, Man Utd are yet to agree personal terms, with director of football John Murtough in discussions with Veronique Rabiot, Adrien's mother and agent.

While the hunt for Rabiot is seemingly approaching its conclusion, Man Utd are still in for another midfielder - namely Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

The Serbian international has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in every transfer window for the past few years, with the Man Utd boardroom clearly impressed by what he brings to the table.

Despite repeated interest in the Lazio man, he has stayed put at the Serie A club since joining in 2015, and enjoyed a productive season under Maurizio Sarri in the 2021-22 campaign, scoring 11 goals and assisting a further 11 in 37 league appearances.

How much do Lazio want from Man Utd for Milinkovic-Savic?

According to The Telegraph's Jason Burt, Man Utd believe a deal can be struck and it's understood that it will take a bid of around €60m for Lazio to sell the 27-year-old.

Milinkovic-Savic's current deal at Lazio is due to expire in 2024.
