Antony officially completed his blockbuster transfer to Man Utd from Ajax on Deadline Day, signing for a massive fee of €95 million plus €5m in add-ons.

Deadline Day: Every confirmed transfer around Europe

This makes the Brazilian winger the second most expensive transfer in Manchester United’s history after Paul Pogba.

Much has been said about the inflated price of Antony’s transfer fee for a player who doesn’t boast the numbers befitting of a €100m signing.

Antony v Mason Mount

Indeed in his two and a bit years in the Eredivisie, Antony scored just 18 league goals in 57 games.

In his first season at Ajax in 2020-21, Antony scored nine goals in 32 games. This was followed by eight goals in 23 games last season.

These seasonal figures and averages are far inferior to the numbers of an 18-year-old Mason Mount during the season he spent on loan at Vitesse in 2017-18.

Mount scored an impressive 14 goals in 32 matches for the Dutch side, despite his age – more goals than Antony has ever managed in a single season.

Twitter user @ReeceJamesSZNN tweeted : “£100M signing Antony vs 18 years old Mason Mount.”

This tweet led to a number of replies – both mocking Antony and defending Mount.

Mount’s form for Vitesse played an important role in his development as he went on to have another successful loan the following season at Derby before returning to Chelsea and becoming a regular there.

The pressure certainly will be on Antony to justify his massive pricetag.
