Arsenal unhappy with Leno’s stinging criticism of club
Arsenal can’t understand the reasoning behind Bernd Leno’s stinging recent criticism of the club.
Leno left Arsenal after four years in order to join Fulham in an £8 million deal.
The Germany international publicly attacked Arsenal last week, remarking that he was forced to leave the club after being unfairly dropped.
What did Leno say?
“When I realised that it wasn’t about performance or quality, I knew that I had to go," Leno blasted to SportBild.
“In preparation, I saw that it is not about performance, but only about politics. It was clear to me: I had to get out of here.”
Fabrizio Romano now reports that Arsenal are not happy with Leno’s words and can’t understand the reasoning behind them.
“I’m told that Arsenal can’t understand the meaning behind Leno’s words as they simply wanted and signed Aaron Ramsdale as goalkeeper for present and future,” Romano explained.
“I think Leno is a very good goalkeeper and can be a good signing for Fulham, but Arsenal had a different strategy and it has to be respected.”
Leno only made eight appearances for Arsenal last season, which wasn’t enough for him as he hoped to get more time on the pitch.
Prior to that, Leno was the undisputed first-choice in goal as he joined the club at a time where Arsenal wanted to replace Petr Cech, who was in the final spell of his career.
Upon Mikel Arteta’s arrival, things changed, and by the start of the 2021-22 season, Arsenal spent big to sign Aaron Ramsdale, completely limiting Leno’s opportunities and forcing him to look for a move elsewhere.
With the World Cup just two months away, Leno is hoping his move to Fulham will be enough to get him into Hansi Flick’s squad.
