Chelsea transfers: Every signing and sale for 2022-23
Chelsea had an extraordinarily busy summer after the arrival of new owner Todd Boehly, breaking the world record for the most money spent in a single transfer window.
The Blues splashed more than £250 million on eight players, partially to compensate for some key figures who left the club.
A host of fringe players managed to depart, either on loan or permanently as Chelsea looked to enter a new era under fresh ownership.
What players have Chelsea signed in 2022-23?
Wesley Fofana: £72m - from Leicester
Marc Cucurella: £58m - from Brighton
Raheem Sterling: £50m - from Manchester City
Kalidou Koulibaly: £34m - from Napoli
Carney Chukwuemeka: £16m - from Aston Villa
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: £11m - from Barcelona
Gabriel Slonina: £8m - from Chicago Fire
Denis Zakaria: loan - from Juventus
Chelsea spent the vast majority of their budget restructuring their defence, bringing in Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella and Kalidou Koulibaly for a combined total of around £166m.
There was also a desire to bring in attacking reinforcements, with Raheem Sterling arriving and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signing on deadline day to reunite with Thomas Tuchel, whom he played under at Dortmund.
The Blues also looked towards recruiting for the future by signing teenagers Carney Chukwuemeka and Gabriel Slonina, with the latter returning to Chicago Fire on loan.
With Chelsea having spent big on a host of positions, it meant they were forced to rely on the loan market to strengthening in midfield and Denis Zakaria was the club’s final arrival of the window from Juventus.
What players have Chelsea sold in 2022-23?
Timo Werner: £18m - to RB Leipzig
Emerson: £13m - to West Ham
Billy Gilmour: £9m - to Brighton
Kenedy: £450k - to Real Valladolid
Antonio Rudiger: free - to Real Madrid
Andreas Christensen: free - to Barcelona
Marcos Alonso: free - to Barcelona
Ross Barkley: free - to Nice
Despite their huge outlay, Chelsea only managed to raise just over £30m in sales, excluding loan fees, with Timo Werner’s departure to RB Leipzig accounting for more than half of their income.
Chelsea were dealt a huge blow in losing Antonio Rudiger, Marcos Alonso and Andreas Christensen on free transfers, prompting their big outlay on their defence.
Fringe players such as Emerson, Billy Gilmour, Kenedy and Ross Barkley all departed, providing some relief on Chelsea’s wage bill as the club looked to clear out their deadwood.
What players have Chelsea loaned in 2022-23?
Romelu Lukaku: loan - to Inter
Malang Sarr: loan - to Monaco
Callum Hudson-Odoi: loan - to Bayer Leverkusen
Ethan Ampadu: loan - to Spezia
Gabriel Slonina: loan - to Chicago Fire
Abdul Baba Rahman: loan - to Reading
Chelsea have been the biggest users of the loan market in recent years but new UEFA regulations cap the amount of players that a club can allow to leave temporarily.
Romelu Lukaku was the most high-profile loan departure and Chelsea received around £7m in sending him back to Inter for the season after a disastrous campaign.
Callum Hudson-Odoi, Malang Sarr and Ethan Ampadu all went abroad in search of first-team football, while Abdul Rahman headed for a second season at Reading.
